Choosing the Best Gutter Materials for Amarillo, Texas: Pros and Cons

New Vision Exterior Solutions • November 13, 2025

Looking to install a new gutter system in the Amarillo or Texas Panhandle area? Choosing the right material is important for long-term performance in our climate conditions.

First, determine if you want a continuous or sectional gutter system. For the most durable, leak-proof system to hold up against Amarillo’s extreme weather, we always recommend a continuous (seamless) gutter. Seamless gutters have less chance of leaks at joints and they add curb appeal, too!

Let’s discuss the most common gutter materials and how they stand up to Panhandle conditions.

Aluminum Gutters

Pros of Aluminum Gutters

Inexpensive. Aluminum gutters are lightweight and come in a variety of colors. They are somewhat weather resistant, but do require maintenance after some time.

Cons of Aluminum Gutters (in Amarillo)

Aluminum is a very light metal. For that reason, it is a lot more susceptible to wind and hail damage in the Texas Panhandle. The panels can dent (particularly with hail) and even get pulled away from the fascia during high winds which leads to sagging and leaking gutters. If you choose aluminum, we recommend a heavier gauge during your gutter installation in Amarillo.

Galvanized Steel Gutters

Pros of Galvanized Steel Gutters (Specific to Amarillo)

Galvanized steel gutters are extremely durable and coated with zinc. They are a good option for Amarillo homes in terms of strength because they offer greater resistance to heavy winds, damaging hail, and ice loads than aluminum gutters.

Cons of Galvanized Steel Gutters

Galvanized steel is susceptible to rusting if the zinc coating is worn down. They may require frequent cleanings and inspection in the Panhandle because of the potential for abrasion from dust and debris that could damage the protective coating and allow corrosion/clogging to occur. Leaf guards can also assist in keeping them clog free.

Vinyl Gutters

Pros of Vinyl Gutters

Vinyl gutters are fairly inexpensive and are fade and rust resistant because of the material.

Cons of Vinyl Gutters (Specific to Amarillo)

Vinyl is not typically recommended for the harsh Texas Panhandle climate. They tend to have significant durability problems as they will break down quickly over time due to intense Amarillo sun (UV rays) and the potential for cracking due to the constant freeze/thaw cycles we get in the winter months. Expansion and contraction from extreme Amarillo temperature fluctuations cause joint failure and brittleness in the material. Color options are limited.

Copper Gutters

Pros of Copper Gutters (Specific to Amarillo)

Aesthetic is the number one reason that many homeowners decide to install copper gutters, but it is also a stronger material than other gutter options. Copper is extremely durable against all types of Panhandle weather, including hail and high winds. It’s beauty also adds a huge amount to your home’s curb appeal. You will not have to worry about re-painting them or mildew accumulating on the surface.

Cons of Copper Gutters

Although they are durable and don’t need paint, patina will eventually form over copper, creating discoloration over time. Copper also has the highest initial cost of all Amarillo gutter options.

Investing in Gutter Materials That Protect Your Amarillo Home

Selecting the ideal gutter material is the first line of defense in safeguarding your Amarillo home. Amarillo’s weather includes a host of design factors: wind, hail, and wild temperature fluctuations. Selecting the right, durable material (heavy-gauge aluminum or steel) is of utmost importance.
